H3 Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
This was a surprisingly complex wine. Good nose of blackberry and vanilla, deep dark fruit flavors, and once it warmed up, the fruit took on an almost figgy quality. Long finish that ended slightly bitter, so we aerated it and the tannins smoothed out nicely. This bested several Napa Cabs we tried this week. More tart than ripe fruit, but what a nice wine for the price!
This is the first time a wine reminded me of Neapolitan ice cream. Weird, right? Just hear me out. After the initial swirls, I detected notes of grass and vanilla. The wine had a smooth body, featuring flavors of ripe blackberry and chocolate. See, the three strata of Neapolitan: vanilla, berry, and chocolate! I’m not totally insane, right?
There was a hint of bitterness that lingered in the corners of my mouth after swallowing, but aeration immensely helped. Also, the finish was a bit spiky, but I think in a year or two, this wine will be even better and more even.
